Insect Lore CalloutLive Butterfly Garden - What's in the Box

12-inch habitat, guide, dropper, and coupon. View larger.

Live Caterpillars Mailed Directly to You
The Butterfly Garden comes with a coupon to send away for five caterpillars. The caterpillars are hatched from eggs in a butterfly nursery and mailed to your home in a special clear container, complete with caterpillar food.

Live Caterpillars

Live caterpillars and food

Keeping the caterpillars out of direct sunlight, children can watch them eat, grow, and after seven to ten days, form their chrysalides and begin their transformation into butterflies. The transformation from caterpillar to butterfly normally takes two to three weeks: seven to ten days in caterpillar stage, and seven to ten days in chrysalis stage. Insect Lore guarantees that at least three of the five caterpillars you receive will grow into adult butterflies.

Observe the Metamorphosis Up Close
The Butterfly Garden comes with a pop-up butterfly observation habitat, which is a cylindrical mesh container measuring 12 inches tall. Once the caterpillars become chrysalides, they can be transferred to the habitat, where they will complete their transformation into adult Painted Lady butterflies. Children will be excited to keep a close eye on the changing chrysalides and watch this seemingly magical metamorphosis.

Your Very Own Butterflies
Once the butterflies emerge, children can have lots of fun feeding them and watching them eat. The kit comes with a dropper for squeezing sugar water into the habitat for the butterflies to drink. It is recommended that flowers be placed in the habitat for the butterflies to rest on while they enjoy their meals. Kids will delight in observing the butterflies unfurl their proboscises to suck up the sugar water.

If you receive your butterflies during warmer weather, when temperatures are above 55 degrees, you can experience the excitement of releasing the butterflies into the wild. Caterpillars are available for delivery year-round, so if yours arrive in a colder month, you can keep your fully-grown butterflies in the mesh habitat for their lifespan, which is about two to four weeks.

Additional mail-in certificates are available for order, so once you've released your butterflies, you can reuse the Butterfly Garden and experience the magic of metamorphosis again and again.

What's in the Box
Mesh butterfly habitat, feeding dropper, activity guide, complete instructions, and mail-in coupon for five caterpillars, and food.

Witness one of nature's most spectacular transformations up close with this reusable, collapsible habitat. Fine, transparent mesh lets you see butterfly metamorphosis up close. Product includes easy-to-use feeder and complete instructions for habitat. Butterfly larvae with food shipped directly to your home. The habitat collapses for storage when not in use. You can adopt and raise a handful of caterpillars, watch them transform into painted lady butterflies, then lift the garden cover to release your beautiful specimens into the wild. This exciting habitat makes a fabulous introduction to the miracles of nature. The larvae and food available round the year.

Like most of you parents, my daughter and I have seen the Dream Lite commercial on Sprout. And she wanted nothing more than a Dream Lite of her very own. However, I'm dubious of most items advertised on TV - especially those directed toward children. It seems like they are never as colorful, as bright, as cuddly as they seem on the commercials. And given the price of this item, I had to give it some serious thought.
Well, the Dream Lite was delivered today and tonight, she's sleeping soundly, her Dream Lite by her side - and she didn't stop smiling all evening. Obviously, she loves it.

Mom's point of view:
1) I was a bit dismayed by how long I was told it would take to ship. However, it came days earlier than they said it would.
2) Size - like some of the other reviewers, I can tell you that the size is a shock! They must have chosen very small children for that commercial, because these are tiny. I anticipated something the size of a normal pillow pet. To be fair, the product description says it's only 11 inches. However when you watch the commercial, these seem huge. Prepare your child for the actual size.
3) Brightness - in a darkened room, the colors are very bright and vibrant. It actually looks as vivid as it does on the commercial. No disappointment here at all! In the case of the brightness and how great the stars look, the commercial is absolutely accurate. And the bigger the room, the bigger the stars. It's really quite impressive.
4) Cuddliness - at first you might think that the plastic panel on the back would be too hard for a good cuddle. My daughter would disagree. Definitely cuddle-worthy!
5) Price - I still think it's overpriced. While I don't regret the purchase, it's one for a special gift - birthday or Christmas. As an everyday buy, it's pricey.
6) Improvements - I would love this to have soft music or nature sounds, but that's just a personal preference. :-)
All in all, though I still wince at the price, I'm glad I made the purchase.

Perhaps it was the numerous weapons they came with, the colorful packaging, or the weird variety of characters in that first wave of action figures? Whatever the case, I'm thrilled the TMNT are still around and in the middle of making another huge comeback. With IDW publishing an excellent monthly comic and reprinting nice collected versions of the original black and white comics, a new cartoon from Nickelodeon premiering soon, and a movie on the horizon, this seems like the perfect time for Playmates to jump in and play off of the nostalgia of adult fans who first encountered the turtles as children. With the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classic Collection, Playmates has done much what Mattel has done with Masters of the Universe Classics, Bandai with the Thundercats vintage collection, and Hasbro with the Star Wars vintage collection, the G.I. Joe 25th anniversary line, and certain Transformers releases: Recreate beloved vintage action figures in a larger scale with modern articulation and detail. These turtles are recreations of the original action figures with a smattering of detail from the cartoon series. I think Playmates has been highly successful in their endeavor, but read on to learn more about how they have handled my favorite turtle, Raphael: View the original article here

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have a way of popping up every few years with fun new ideas while still maintaining their original charm of being four, fun loving teenagers which are quite proficient in the martial arts. I still remember first discovering the TMNT on the shelf of a toy story my grandmother always took me too and for some reason they captivated me. Maybe it was the numerous weapons they came with, the colorful packaging, or the weird variety of characters in that first wave of action figures? Whatever the case, I'm thrilled the TMNT are still around and making a huge comeback. Positives:
* Michelangelo, like all his brethren, is just amazing to look at! The colors, texture, and size of the figure really cater to the fond memories of the original toys while offering something better than what we saw in the past. While Michelangelo has pupils (the original toys didn't- that came from the cartoon) the facial expression and head sculpt is a dead on recreation of the original figure.
*This guy is articulated! The package proclaims 34 points of articulation, and they're right. Think of any joints you'd find on any other hyperarticulated action figure (double knee and elbow joints and ab crunch) and add individually articulated fingers and toes. There's nothing this turtle can't do!
*Each turtle comes with a display stand that looks like a manhole cover. It has the TMNT logo and Michelangelo's name on it. Stands are always a plus in my book!
*This isn't a complaint, just a warning: It wasn't on Michelangelo, but one of my TMNT classics had some issues with his finger joints (it was Raphael). If your finger joints are stuck be very careful with them, as I could see them possibly being somewhat fragile.
Overall: Of all the many action figures I've purchased this year, these might be my favorites. They're extremely fun, a perfect blend of the vintage looks of the toys and cartoon, and look beautiful as a set. Just having them sitting on top of my entertainment stand almost brings a tear to my eye from time to time. Playmates did a brilliant job with these and I hope we see more characters down the line.

Each Sonic Screwdriver feels just perfect. It doesn't really do all the cool things in the series (just in case the Cybermen are able to buy them), but it does have lights and sounds straight from the show - and it extends too! One end has a purple UV light and the other has a pen nib. You can use the regular pen nib to write shopping lists and the UV ink pen nib to write secret plans. These can then be revealed with the UV light of the Sonic Screwdriver. Equip up, Junior Time Lords - it's time to go Dalek hunting. Super Cool Note: The story goes like this: the prop made for the new series was small. Then this toy came out - it was bigger to accommodate the batteries - and the Doctor Who producers revamped the TV prop on a mold from this toy. So this Sonic Screwdriver is exactly the same size as the one Doctor Who uses on TV!

I'll keep this review brief. You know who Batman is. You know he has a new movie coming out. You know Mattel's Movie Masters are geared more towards collectors than kids. You know that each of the 6 figures in this line includes a piece to help build the Bastignal. Here's the question I didn't know: Is this Batman any different from the Dark Knight Batman from the Movie Masters line? The answer. Other than paint, no, not really.

Positives:
*This is a solid figure with decent articulation. You shouldn't worry about him being breakable or non-poseable.
*The paintjob on this figure is much better than the all black armor of the Drak Knight version. It actually features some more movie accurate greys mixed in.
*The Batsignal piece is necessary for building the Batsignal, and I think anyone who collects these is going to want that. I've put three pieces together so far and the thing is really nice and larger than In expected. It seems like it will be nicely in scale with the figures (or any DC figures in the 6-8 inch range).

Yes, this mold was introduced for the Dark Knight Movie Masters line in 2008, and has been re-packaged multiple times since, but keep two things in mind: 1) The suit in Dark Knight Rises is exactly the same as the one in Dark Knight.
2) The original sculpt is still amazing, even by today's standards (not that sculpting/toy construction has progressed THAT much in four years).

CONCLUSIONS
1) If you don't own any Batmans, this is an excellent first figure to own. Better than any movie masters version and up there with many other versions such as the 10 wave imperex, arkham asylum, and others as the best Batmans. It is a bit smaller than the others, but the Dark Knight version is awesome.
2) Collectors Must OWN. If you are a collector, money is not an issue (and price isn't that high), this is a must own, just as the original version from Batman Begins. Period.
3) For kids, this is an excellent action figure. It is durable, and it has some of the best articulation, if not the best.
4) If you do own other Batmans from movie masters, and you carefully manage the Bat figure fund, look at the Wave 10 Imperex version, the Arkham Asylum versions, Batman and Son DC Direct versions, they are larger, very different from this version, and very nice too.
